The upcoming iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro have finally been unveiled in Apple’s virtual event. The new smartphones will be released on October 23rd, while the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max have a release date set for the 13th of November. The whole new line of phones will be the first of Apple’s products that will support 5G out of the box! So should which smartphone should you buy? Here is the iPhone 12 vs iPhone 12 Pro!

In line with most of Apple’s releases over the last few years, the new iPhone will be released alongside a bevy of different models and price tags. Along with the iPhone 12 ($799), there will be an iPhone 12 mini ($699), an iPhone 12 Pro ($999), and an iPhone 12 Pro Max ($1,099) for consumers to choose from.

iPhone 12th Generation Displays

Unlike the iPhone 11 which contained an LED display while the iPhone 11 Pro had an OLED, the new generation of iPhones will all be released with an OLED display. This seems to be a pattern as well, many of the new iPhones have very similar specs, mostly differing only in camera quality and size.

The iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro will both have 6.1 inches of OLED display(2532 x 1170) with the iPhone 12 mini sitting at 5.4 inches (2340 x 1080) and the iPhone 12 Pro Max with 6.7 inches (2778 x 1284).

With a new Super Retina XDR Display with 1200-nit peak brightness, the new iPhones will be noticeably brighter than the iPhone 11.

Processing Power

The latest iPhones all share the brand new A14 Bionic Chipset. As the world’s first 5nm chipset, Apple claims it will be 40% faster than the previous generations A13. They are also claiming it will be the fastest chip ever put into a smartphone.

On the storage side of things, all 4 of the new iPhone 12 variants have a few different options. For the iPhone 12 and its mini counterpart, there are 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB options. While the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max get a capacity bump with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB options.

Battery Life

The battery life on the new iPhones is about the same as the iPhone 11. Keep in mind the hours were clocked while the iPhone was video streaming. The iPhone 12 mini will have about 10 hours of battery life, the iPhone 12 and Pro models will have 11 hours, and the Pro Max will have 12 hours.

Fast charging will be available on the new devices, no surprise there. However, Apple did upgrade the wireless charging capabilities with the new line up. All the new iPhones will have what Apple refers to as MagSafe. It’s basically a magnet that will allow the phone to be magnetized to a wireless charging station to prevent it from falling off. However, It does not sound like it will make much of a difference in charging capabilities.

Appearance

The iPhone 12 and 12 mini will come in 5 different colors, those being black, red, white, green, and blue. The appearance of the phones themselves seem to look more like the iPhone 5s model, with a less rounded more squared appearance. The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max on the other hand will come in gold, silver, graphite, and pacific blue.

Along with the new colors comes a new aluminum frame on the outside rims of the iPhone 12. The Pro models have a stainless steel frame which is a little heavier but in turn, is higher quality and stronger. All the new devices will share a glass back much like the 5th generation

Camera Quality

Last, but certainly not least, the camera quality of iPhones is something everyone looks for in new devices. All the new devices will rock a 12mp camera like the one in the iPhone 11 but the Pro models have a few advantages over the base iPhone 12.

While the iPhone 12 will have 5x digital zoom capabilities the Pro model will have a 2x optical zoom on top of a 10x digital zoom. The Pro Max in turn will have a 2.5x optical with a 12x digital zoom.

Almost all of the new iPhone 12 models have very similar features so for the average joe looking to upgrade, you might just be better off upgrading to the 12 base model. However, for photographers who would enjoy having a phone closing in on an XLR camera in their pocket, the Pro Max might just be the phone for you! I hope this guide to the new models helped you decide between the iPhone 12 vs iPhone 12 Pro
