God of War Ragnarok, the next leg of Kratos and Atreus’ journey, is DEFINITELY coming to PS4 According to David Jaffe.
Jaffe is the director of original God of War of PS2 and has won numerous prizes for his contribution to the series. However, these days he streams on Twitch and hosts his own podcast.
Someone asked Jaffe if God of War Ragnarok is coming to PS4 on one of hi God of War Twitch streams, to which he answered:
“I’m sure the next GodofWar will be PS4/ PS5. Of course it will”
He continued to say that Jim Ryan has said as much. The latter statement is a reference to an interview with Jim Ryan, CEO and President of SIE President, simply put, the man in charge of everything PlayStation. When asked if God of War 2 will be a PS5 exclusive, Ryan refused to comment. However, Jaffe’s new statements are almost concrete evidence that the game will be a cross-gen release.
From a business point of view, it makes sense for Sony to drop the next God of War on PS4 as well. The game is slated to release sometime in 2021, and going by the current estimates, most of the players will not have access to a PS5 until then, new stocks vanish before they hit the shelves. So if the next God of War is a PS5 exclusive, not only a ton of players will miss out on the game, Sony will miss out on millions in revenue as well.
Some players have expressed their concerns over the game’s performance on last-gen consoles, especially after the blunderous release of Cyberpunk 2077, but the chances of something like that happening are essentially zero, considering Sony’s track record with how well-optimized their first-party titles are for all variants of the PS4.
As a first party exclsuive, God of War Ragnarok is will be tuned and tested on both PS4 and PS5. The best example is SpiderMan Miles Morales, a PS5 lanuch title that also ran pretty well on PS4. Insomniac Games released two versions of the game, one for the PS4 and another for the PS5. Of course, the PS5 version ran and looked better but one couldn’t complain on PS4. Santa Monica will probably follow the same route.
