Samsung launched their SmartTags earlier this year with the launch of their new S21 flagship series, the tags were even a pre-order bonus for people who ordered the S21/S21+ early with S21 Ultra orders getting the latest Galaxy Buds Pro. While the tags only work with Samsung phones, it seems that Apple is set to release the AirTags at the rumored show that is set to take place in March.

Apple AirTags could be coming soon

Apple AirTags are Apple’s solution to Samsung’s SmartTags – the tiny device adds the ability to attach to your physical object like a bag, bike, or anything important that can be tracked via your phone to a certain proximity.

While Apple has yet to officially acknowledge the existence of the AirTags, it seems that there is a hint of them in the latest iOS/iPadOS 14.5 Beta Build.

Under Find My devices, there is a new category for items.

This was spotted by IceCool Tech on Twitter:

There is a rumor that Apple is set to hold a March event very soon, which is where they’re expected to announce a new iPad Pro and a revision to the MacBook Pro line. That event would be the key location to drop the accessory on to the laps of customers.

With the popularity of these remote tags, your phone can now act as a way to keep track of your valuable possessions. The applications of it can help track your lost or stolen non-electronic items like backpack, bag, purse, bike, and plenty of other items.

From the description, it seems that the tags will be able to operate on cellular and WiFi which would make them an invaluable asset in helping locate your missing item accurately even without internet.

The only issue would be securely hiding the AirTag so it can’t be taken off by the thief.

For now, all we can do is wait for Apple to officially announce the product and attach a price tag to it. Given the purpose of the product, we should have these available almost immediately after the rumored show.
